The $2,500,000 Emergency Methane gas FIX for the Central Landfill

This item is on the agenda of the upcoming April 21, 2020 Mat-Su Borough Assembly meeting.

The Manager is seeking approval to use $2.5 million from the Solid Waste enterprise fund to pay for an emergency fix for the ongoing methane gas problem at the Central Landfill on the P-W highway.

Earlier this year, the MSB was cited by the State Department of Environmental Conservation for having methane gas levels that far exceeded allowable levels at the landfill. The MSB also failed to properly report this problem to the State. https://matsumuckraker.com/2020/02/17/whats-that-smell-the-increasing-methane-gas-problem-at-the-mat-su-landfill/

The MSB continues to have excess methane readings according to the Informational Memorandum supporting the new proposed Ordinance.

AK DEC issued a Notice of Violation (NOV) to the MSB. The MSB is required to have a design in place to fix the problem by May 15th and to have the new system up and running by October 31, 2020.

NOTE that the DEC was NOT HAPPY with the MSB’s initial response to the Notice of Violation. See the March letter to the MSB from DEC.
